Zicatela, otherwise known as The Mexican Pipeline, is Puerto Escondidos’ prized gem! As one of the meccas of surfing, Zicatela is a big, gnarly, barreling wave, that breaks just 50 yards from the beach. Zicatela is not for the light hearted, and has become a travel center for some of the best surfers in the world during its peak months (March to October). Zicatela has been home to some of the most prestigious surfing competitions, and is sometimes referred to as one of the most dangerous waves in the world! If this wave seems like too much, don’t worry, there is an ecstatic nightlife, delicious beachside restaurants, and plenty of other activities on offer for the everyday traveler! Enjoy the view!
This beautiful bay contains a pristine beach which typically has the best waves for visitors wanting to learn to surf! Its 2 waves, a left and a right, break deep on a rock reef, and are most prominent during the south swell season (March-October). With long soft waves, this beach offers those looking to learn to surf the opportunity to stand up and enjoy a lengthy and gentle wave. Providing immense opportunity to progress. It is nearly certain that a learner will be successful in surfing at Carrizalillo. After your time in the water is done, sip on ice cold beers, and munch on fresh caught fish at some of the local favorite beachside restaurants! A perfect beach-day escape!
When the swell is down, La Punta is the ideal zone beginners, especially those who are goofy footed. A long perfect sand bottom left point, La Punta is a perfect option to learn to surf when the waves are small. As the swell fills in, and the tide drops La Punta begins to look more inviting to those surfers with more experience. A long left, with multiple sections, there is opportunity to hit the lip, get barreled, and have the time of your life. La Punta is also home to some of Puerto Escondidos’ best restaurants, nicest hotels and hostels, and liveliest sunset happy hours!
This beach is best when the swell direction is from the north. It has waves that break both left and right onto deep water with a sandy beach below. Marinero could be classed as the “little Zicatela”. Here you will often get a shorter, faster, more tube-like wave that is ideal for beginners who want a bit more of an adrenalin rush.
